My 2021 Intention: Investing in Sleep

This post is in collaboration with Avocado Mattress. Thank you to Avocado Mattress for gifting me my mattress! Although the mattress was gifted, all opinions in this post are my own.

It’s a new year, and while I’m not one to make large resolutions - there is one thing that I am putting my energy and focus on this year. In 2021, I am making it a priority to invest in my sleep. Sleep is one of the greatest healers and I am a changed person when I prioritize and get a full 8 hours of rest. Sleep helps to regulate your mood, hormones, allows your body to recover, boosts immunity, and also has countless other benefits. I think we all can agree that there is no better feeling than waking up feeling fully rested and ready to take on the day. So I’m pouring all my focus into making that feeling consistent and attainable on a nightly basis.

When I moved into my first apartment, I was overwhelmed with all of the choices that needed to be made to make the space feel like home. One thing I instantly thought of was my mattress - there’s a saying that you either spend time on your feet or time in your bed so it’s wise to invest in good shoes and a good mattress. Well, I made a choice to invest in a good mattress (shoes I still could kind of care less about). Back to the mattress, I knew that I wanted something that was organic, sustainably made, and would last the test of time. As I began my mattress search, I wrote down a list of pros and cons for each mattress and without a doubt, Avocado Mattress came out as the clear winner. I loved the transparency of the Avocado Mattress brand, the fact that the bed was going to be shipped in sustainable packaging to my new apartment, and that the price range seemed to be comparable to other mattresses on the market. The only “con” that I ever found to the Avocado Mattress was that it is SO sustainably made that they don’t have mattresses sitting around to be shipped (which if you’re in a pinch and need a mattress ASAP could be an issue), they’re made to order - and honestly, I’m not even sure that’s a con at all because sustainably made pieces are always worth the wait. It was a no-brainer for me to invite the Avocado Mattress into my new space.

Here’s are a few key reasons I fell in love with The Avocado Green Mattress:

I wanted to link the website for the story behind Avocado Mattress and all that they do to truly go above and beyond to embody what a sustainable business looks like, you can find that here.

I’ve been sleeping on my Avocado Mattress for a year now, and I can say that it is the best mattress I have ever had and will only ever choose to buy an Avocado Mattresses from here on out. The peace of mind I have every single night that my mattress was sustainably made by a thoughtful brand that is doing well for the world and I truly believe that Avocado Mattress goes above and beyond for their customers, their ethics, and the environment. I’m grateful to be connected with such a forward thinking brand that lives out their mantra of “Natural, Safe, and Responsible” to the fullest. I could go on and on about my Avocado Mattress because it is without a doubt one of my favorite pieces in my apartment, but if you’ve been considering a new mattress, I have no hesitation in recommending anything and everything made by Avocado Mattress - plus their 365-day sleep trial gives you security in trying it out for yourself!

As I mentioned, this year my intention is to invest in my sleep - so investing in a mattress was the #1 priority, but I wanted to share a couple of other things I have been doing (or am introducing to my nightly routine) to set myself up for a good nights sleep each and every night.

  • Create a “wind-down” routine. Make the routine attainable and easy to do and something that you look forward to everyday.

  • Make a caffeine “cut-off” - caffeine stays in your system for 10 hours, so sip wisely.

  • Set the tone for sleep - lighting, essential oils, music

  • Reduce blue light before bed

  • Take a bath or hot shower

  • Leave your phone out of the bedroom - this one is new for me and something I am going to be experimenting with this month!

  • Skincare and self care

  • Read a book instead of scrolling on a phone or computer

  • Start the evening routine early into the evening to be able to spend time in each step of the process.

Although I am sure that 2021 will present sleep challenges of it’s own, I am still setting this intention to bring the focus back to the things that I can do to make a restful night possible. Improving my sleep has truly improved my life and I cannot wait to see the benefits that come from focusing on my sleep in the new year!
